Philosophies of the Anaiwan
Philosophies of the Anaiwan is Simon Munro’s PHD exhibition. Like many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists today, Munro portrays the memories and stories of his family and connection to the land.
The exhibition will explore the philosophies of the Anaiwan people through numerous forms of creative expression. The processes of carved tree boles (Dendrogylphs) in the tradition of the artist’s heritage (the Anaiwan/Kamilaroi) are a natural starting point. Other forms will include ochre and acrylic painting, Kangaroo skin work, intaglio copper plate etching, and wooden and stone artefact reproduction. Munro has endeavoured to express observations and interpretation of the environment with subject matter that ranges from suggestions of flora and fauna to the abstracted objectiveness of rivers, creeks, soil types and animals.
