Indifferent Light: ‘en plein air’

Greg Muller

The term ‘en plein air’ refers to the practice of painting out of doors, in direct engagement with nature, where the transitory effects of light can be observed and recorded.

Painting in the tradition of ‘en plein air’ allows the artist to capture something more than just the depiction of a landscape, adding mood and atmosphere to the setting.

Tamworth artist Greg Muller was awarded highly commended in the 2014 NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize for his work, In Different Light Mount Soma. Muller’s interpretation of the landscape was described as sensitive with lovely colouring, showcasing the creativity and variety of contemporary plein air painting.
