Nest of the Whistling Kite

Join 2026 Maree Kelly for an exhibition walk through and artist talk of her solo exhibition, Nest of the Whistling Kite. Maree's work is deeply inspired by the landscapes of northwestern New South Wales and the Liverpool Plains region.

As a landscape painter, my artistic practice centres on immersing myself in the natural environment and forging a deep connection with the landscapes I explore. My work reflects a journey of observation and understanding, often taking months or even years to develop, as I respond to specific landscapes or themes that resonate with me.

My work is deeply inspired by the landscapes of northwestern New South Wales and the Liverpool Plains region, and I feel a strong connection to the land where I live. Recently, I have concentrated on the landscapes of our farming property, which derives its name from the Gamilaraay language and is believed to mean “home” or “nest of the Whistling Kite.” Our property features a unique environment on the western end of Long Mountain, characterised by rocky outcrops and cliffs overlooking the surrounding plains. For the past two years, this scenery has been my focus, and the work presented in the exhibition reflects my fascination with the landscapes that surround me every day.
