For thousands of years, Numburindi people have practised weaving, passing knowledge and techniques from generation to generation. Using locally harvested fibres such as pandanus, bark and vines, artists create beautiful and functional woven objects, naturally dyed using materials from Country. Today, many weavers also incorporate contemporary found materials into their practice, transforming discarded items into vibrant works while helping to care for Country.

Join Janette Murrungun from the remote community of Numbulwar in South East Arnhem Land for a hands-on weaving circle workshop presented in conjunction with 6TTT Nature Machine.

Janette invites participants to:

“Learn traditional techniques passed down through generations and about Maguj (pandanus) and Nanja (repurposed ghost nets) collected from our shores. As you weave, you will be part of a living practice connecting people, place and purpose. Sit with us, share stories, and take part in keeping these traditions strong.”

During this workshop, you will be introduced to the traditional technique of coil weaving and begin creating the base of a small basket. Participants will also receive materials and guidance to complete their basket at home.

Each participant will receive a Numbulwar Numburindi Arts Weaving Kit, containing everything needed to learn how to weave a small basket. Guided by Janette's step-by-step instructions, you'll practise with colourful raffia while learning the fundamentals of weaving, then continue exploring the technique with fibres you can source yourself.

Suitable for beginners. All materials supplied.
