Growing up in a family of engineers, the young Malone would spend each weekend dismantling and rebuilding gadgets. Quickly gaining a fascination for anything mechanical, there was no machine more beautiful or magical in his eye than that of the camera.
Malone embarked on his career as a trainee at a department store photography studio where he was tasked with shooting every item in the store for the weekly catalogue. Though seemingly mundane at the time, it laid the groundwork for his technical mastery of lighting.
Malone is heavily influenced by the work and technique of Robert Capa. Capa's ability to capture images in the most extreme of conditions required a calculated and improvisational shooting style, to which Malone has subscribed throughout his career.
Feeling more at home in the company of nature than people, Malone spent many years photographing landscapes in remote locations. Facing his introversion led him to embrace portraiture, now his most favoured and highly regarded work.
Malone started his career shooting film but embraced digital for two decades before returning to the richness of analog. For Malone, photography is a craft that combines an ability to see things others cannot with technical expertise honed through years of trial and error.
His upcoming exhibition, 'First Rodeo,' promises to be the most authentic representation of his artistic journey yet. Set against the backdrop of a high-stakes rodeo environment, the collection captures the tension and magic inherent in analog photography.
