Printmaking with Jodie Herden

Thursday 3 October

 

Join us for a creative workshop delivered by Jodie Herden, local Gamilaraay artist. Students will play with both relief and silk screen printmaking processes. Using printmaking materials students will enjoy experiments with line, shapes and patterns using foam prints and silk screens. Students can experiment with making multi-coloured and multi-layered prints.

This workshop is perfect for students eager to explore art and printmaking in a creative and engaging way. An opportunity to use specialised equipment not always available at home. 

Key Features:

  • Guided by leading Gamilaraay artist
  • Hands on printmaking processes
  • Create a plate with raised areas.
  • Ink the plate with a thin layer of printing ink
  • Place the paper on the inked plate and burnish
  • The raised parts of the plate catch the ink and then it gets transferred to the print paper.

Workshop Activities:

  • Receive step-by-step instructions and individual guidance to create a successful relief print.
  • An opportunity to unleash your creativity.
  • Introduction to printmaking process and opportunities to experiment.
  • Create artwork using lines, patterns and marks

Materials Provided:

  • Printmaking Foam
  • Ink of various colour
  • Printmaking tools and equipment
  • Paper for artwork creation

Artistic Outcomes:

  • Student will gain an appreciation for the cultural significance of Gomilaroi art and stories.
  • They will learn how these stories can help them understand and navigate the world around them.
  • Create an artwork that tells a story important to them.
  • Create their own artwork to take home.

Session 1             10.00 - 11.00      For infants + early primary students

Session 2             11.30 - 1.00        For primary students

Session 3             2.00 - 4.00pm     For high school

The gallery is fully accessible and offers free parking at the rear of the building.

Artist Bio

Jodie is an experienced exhibiting artist with over 30 years art making experience. For Jodie, art is her passion; she knows it's her ancestors guiding her. With every brushstroke she feels them, surrounding and guiding her, giving her the images for the artwors and the stories of her cultures. With works exhibited all around the state, Jodie was invited to have works exhibited overseas and promoted in an ad for Qantas with one of Australia’s largest Arts Networks 'Bluethumb'.

Jodie has several commissions hanging throughout NSW and Australia. Jodie has been commissioned to do pieces for FRNSW, after lengthy community consultation across Gomeroi country as a part of NSWFR Indigenous Partnership Strategy her work can now be viewed on several Fire Tankers across the Gomeroi Nation. She also has completed several large murals in schools across the Armidale Diocese and public sector system, most recently completed a commissioned piece and mural for Hockey NSW and Hockey Australia RAP document.

For the past 10 years, Jodie has facilitated many Cultural/Art workshops across the New England Northwest Region. She was awarded Aboriginal Artist of the Year in 2016 NSW LALC NAIDOC Awards and was honoured to receive the 2018 Indigenous Women of the Year Award with Zonta International.

Through her art and now writing of children's books, Jodie aims to highlight, educate and share the beauty of her culture sharing the narrative of her people and her country!
